The Seaside Open-Air Museum Building in Ventspils – Where History Merges with Modernity

This spring, the new building of the Ventspils Seaside Open-Air Museum opened its doors, seamlessly blending centuries-old history of the Courland coast with modern elements. This project marks a significant step in preserving and promoting the culture and history of Ventspils.

An outstanding project has been developed in collaboration with the design firm BALTS UN MELNS, and it has already received widespread recognition. An article about this project has recently been published in the prestigious architecture journal "Latvijas Architektūra," where it is highlighted as a significant cultural event not only in Ventspils but also throughout Latvia.

The new museum building

The new museum building is also aesthetically appealing and serves as an excellent example of how historical preservation can intersect with modern architectural and design trends. As architect Ija Rudzīte notes, the building's design is inspired by the coastal environment, ships, and boats, which are emblematic of the open-air museum's values. Some of the inspiration also comes from local vernacular architecture and boat craftsmanship.

The museum grounds feature a unique boat shed where historically significant fishing boats and vessels are stored, along with various other exhibits that allow visitors to explore both maritime history and traditional fishing practices. The collection is housed in two open-air sheds that protect the historical exhibits from the elements while creating a visually impressive space.

Special attention has been given to the new main museum building, which features a striking interplay of light and transparency. From the main entrance, visitors can view the outdoor exhibition, showcasing how architecture can be both aesthetically pleasing and practical.

Since this spring, the museum has delighted visitors with the exhibition "By the Sea and on Land," which offers interactive elements such as a mobile app that serves as a guide, as well as a diorama featuring characteristic wildlife and birds of North Kurzeme.

Ventspils Seaside Open-Air Museum is yet another successful example of how Latvia's regions, not just Riga, can create significant cultural and historical sites that attract both local and international visitors. It is a place where history is preserved and presented in a modern way, while also forming a harmonious connection with traditional values.
